Star Hurricane's injury could thwart Big Bash and World Cup title hopes

Updated 2 days ago by Ryan Bentley

The Hobart Hurricanes secured the last-over win in Perth, but it may have come at the cost of their star batter.

Hobart secured the four-wicket win with three balls to spare against the Perth Scorchers, thanks largely to Tim David's 42 (from 28 balls).

But David's hamstring injury stopped him from going any further and, dependent on the severity of the injury, it could scupper Hobart's chances of going back-to-back, such is the IPL star's impact.

With Matthew Wade also on the sidelines for an unknown period of time thanks to an undisclosed injury, the Hurricanes' batting stocks could be a little light.

A consolation for the Hurricanes though will be that both Beau Webster and Jake Weatherald should be available for selection in two weeks' time at the conclusion of the Ashes series.

It may also thwart Australia's Twenty20 World Cup plans, the tournament held during February and March in India and Sri Lanka.

With the ball, Hobart had few issues. Fast bowler Riley Meredith picked up an economical 2-19 from his four overs and Bangladeshi leg-spinner Rishad Hossain took 3-33.

More impressive for Hossain was the calibre of who he got out, removing Australian representatives Cooper Connolly and Aaron Hardie as well as Laurie Evans, who was threatening to explode at the back end of the Scorchers' innings.

It is a short turnaround for the Hobart Hurricanes. They will be back on the park on December 29 at Ninja Stadium taking on the Melbourne Renegades at 7.15pm.
