A newly-renovated Housing Tasmania home in Rocherlea has been destroyed by fire overnight.

Firefighters were first called to 5 Lemonwood Street about 11pm on April 16 after reports that a smoke alarm was going off inside the vacant home.

Crews found a smashed-in window, and a fire on the floor of a bedroom.

The fire was extinguished and the home secured, but Tasmania Fire Service was called back to another fire at the same site around 4am.

This time, the whole house was already up in flames, and by the time the fire was extinguished the home was destroyed.

The property had recently been renovated by Housing Tasmania, and a new family was just days from moving into the home.

The home will now have to be demolished.

A fire investigator will be on the scene today to investigate how the fire was started.

The incident follows a serious vandalism incident in Rocherlea on Sunday, when a mattress fire blew up an electrical substation and left nearly 1600 homes without power.
