Tasmania's newest indoor sport facility is about to get even bigger.

The $43.6 million Northern Suburbs Community Recreation Hub (NSCRH) opened last month in a former warehouse site in Mowbray.

Now, the state government is setting its sights on completing an $18.9 million extension that will add four more indoor courts, taking the total spend to $62.5 million.

Should the upgrade's development application be approved by council, work on the new courts will begin by the end of 2026.

Sports Minister Nick Duigan said the new multipurpose courts would be suitable for basketball and netball.

"This will take the total number of indoor courts in this incredible new facility to 11," Mr Duigan said.

"[It] will have a significant and positive impact on sport in Launceston.

"The expansion will complement the 10,000 square metre hub's existing facilities, which ... includes a wide range of activities such as rock climbing, gymnastics, boxing and weightlifting."

The two-thirds-finished precinct has been paid for by the state government ($46.3 million), the federal government ($15.1 million) and City of Launceston ($1.1 million).

Funding for the third stage was announced in mid-2025, when money originally allocated for the Elphin Sports Centre was redirected to Mowbray.

At the time, Basketball Tasmania chief executive Ben Smith said building the courts at Mowbray was a more effective use of funds.

"When they started looking into the Elphin redevelopment, it was going to be three courts and it was going to cost something like $40 million, and the centre would have had to shut down for something like 18 months during the development," he said.

"They looked at the Mowbray hub and decided to add a four-court development onto what's already been planned out there.

"This way you don't lose any car parks, you get four courts instead of three, and you don't have to shut down for 18 months while it's being built.

"We're 100 per cent behind it."
