After devoting most of her childhood to swimming, Sophie Hills was looking for something else to do.

Enter football.

Born missing half her right arm, the 19-year-old made her debut for George Town on Saturday and was named in the best players in the Saints' loss to Old Scotch.

"One of my friends started playing about a month ago and she convinced me and said, 'you'll have to come down and train, you'll love it'," she said.

"I started training last week and then I said, 'I want to play on the weekend', so it just went from one thing to another in about two weeks.

"[Coach] Rick [Geeves] put me in last Thursday and he said, 'I reckon you'll be right', so I played and I had heaps of people come up to me on Saturday and said, 'you played a great game'."

Geeves described Hills as energetic, determined and enthusiastic, praising her ability to fit in with a team that she's only recently joined.

"She has fitted in really well with the group, which is testament to the likeable Soph is," he said.

"What she lacks in game knowledge and basic skills at this stage, she more than makes up for in determination and willingness to learn and improve.

"She is a pleasure to coach and soaks up every bit of advice given to her by the coaches and fellow players, her enthusiasm is infectious."

It was the team aspect of football that lured Hills in after her time in individual sports.

She said the team was instantly welcoming, and she relished the opportunity to train and play alongside 30 teammates.

"Even though there is a team aspect [to swimming], you're still an individual sportsperson, so I really enjoyed having a bunch of girls on the team, playing together," she said.

"Obviously I still can't pass a ball and do all those amazing things like everyone else can, but I still got out there, enjoyed myself and it was really fun actually.

"I've honestly never really been a ball sport person, because obviously I always did swimming and just ran for fitness.

"I played soccer when I was really young, but I always wanted to play rugby, but rugby isn't really a big thing in Tassie or down where I am.

"Footy just ended up being my choice because I support AFL and because the community for footy in George Town is really great."

Hills broke many Tasmanian records during her time in the pool, as well as achieving success on the national stage.

But once she made the decision to "retire", she has rarely swum since.

"Just being in the water, there's just a sense of stillness and quiet. which was always my favourite aspect and obviously as an individual person, you could achieve things and you knew it was all because of you," she said.

"But I got to the point where I was getting regular injuries and I was finishing up school and going into uni and I just decided that I wanted to focus on my studies and eliminate the pressure from swimming, so I made a pretty quick decision that I was going to finish up."
