A heartwarming video of a five-month-old cow enjoying her first time at the beach has drawn millions of views on social media.

Owner Brooke Atkins said the Highland heifer called Matilda was born in January.

"I got to witness her birth, so that was very special because cows often have their babies overnight but she actually had her (Matilda) during the day," she said.

"I got to see the whole thing and she came out like a little fluff ball, which was very cute."

Ms Atkins said Matilda, who was born on her property at Lake Cathie, south of Port Macquarie in NSW, ran straight down to the water when they took her and her dog friend Tinker to the beach.

Matilda's first beach outing drew plenty of public attention and she's since been back for another visit.

"Even today (June 24) at the beach when we had her there, there was a couple that just moved from Sydney a few days ago," Ms Atkins said.

The video of Matilda's first time on the beach has clocked up about 3.3 million views, with the majority from people in Australia, the US and Germany. Picture supplied by Brooke Atkins.

"They were in absolute shock at seeing a cow on the beach, so they got heaps of photos with her."

Ms Atkins said the video helps to spread happiness and people across the world have resonated with the sentiment of taking a beloved pet to the beach.

"I think most people in Australia, or worldwide have a pet at their home," she said.

"So it just makes the conversation start about different people taking their different pets to the beach, and just letting them experience the world.

"I've had people message about taking their pigs, their cats, their alpacas...to the beach."

Ms Atkins said one of the most common questions she is asked is if Matilda can swim.

"Cows are actually excellent swimmers and this girl is always up for an adventure," she said.

Ms Atkins said Matilda enjoys spending time with the dogs, goats and humans on the Lake Cathie property and even wanders inside the house to occasionally enjoy some TV.
